Thomas Tuchel has opened up on Romelu Lukaku’s ‘presence’ and ‘profile’ as Chelsea close in on the £97.5m club-record signing of the Inter Milan forward.
The west London side have been chasing the signing of a leading centre-forward throughout the summer and are now on the verge of completing a deal for Lukaku, who has scored 64 goals in just 95 appearances across the past two seasons.
Tuchel has spoken on Chelsea’s move for the 28-year-old and says Lukaku is a forward who will provide his side with ‘a presence in the box’ next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Tuchel said: “Romelu is one of the guys like [Erling] Haaland at Dortmund, [Robert] Lewandowski at Bayern Munich, Harry Kane at Tottenham, who is a real No9 who loves to score and who has a presence in the box. That is not a secret. The sentence is easy to repeat for any coach in the world.
“He is the kind of profile we’re looking for, and if it is possible to convince agents and clubs, we will do our best.”
Tuchel spoke further on his desire to add a player who can ‘fight physically with defenders’ to his forward options, having seen Olivier Giroud leave this summer to join AC Milan.
The German refused to speak specifically on Lukaku as a Chelsea player however, with the formalities of the deal yet to be completed.
“We lost Olivier Giroud, who played a crucial role in the club,” he added. “He was the kind of profile who likes to play with his back to goal, who likes to hold up balls, who creates space for Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, who is ready to fight physically with defenders.
“This is the kind of profile that we don’t have in our squad right now and that we are looking for.
“It’s still not the moment to talk about names, because we have nobody signed yet and we will show all the respect to other clubs.”
