Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has urged the club to spend this summer, in order to address their current slump that looks set to see them miss out on European football next season.
After starting his Gunners reign on a high by lifting the FA Cup at the end of last season, the Spaniard has been unable to replicate such success this term, the club currently in real turmoil after yet another poor domestic campaign.
Currently sitting in tenth and with seemingly no hope of securing European qualification, it looks set to be yet another hugely disappointing season for the north London club, as they slip even further behind the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United at the top of the table.
Those league woes were compounded in midweek as Arteta’s men crashed out of the Europa League following a limp semi-final showing against Unai Emery’s Villarreal side, the former Arsenal boss continuing his excellent record in the competition to progress to his fifth final.
That dismal exit has left the Gunners with no hope of securing Champions League football next season, with it now set to be five seasons in a row without having competed in the continent’s elite competition.
With the absence of European football next season – and its monetary benefits – as well as their recent financial losses of £47.8m, the club have been left in a difficult economic situtation, at a time when it appears they are in desperate need of a squad overhaul.
Despite those financial troubles, Arteta has insisted that the club’s under-fire owners, the Kroenke’s, must invest in the side, in order to avoid sliding even further behind the Premier League’s top performers.
“Time is catching up right now. It’s a trend, it’s years now that this has been happening,” he told the media at his pre-match press conference.
“If the distance and the margins with the rest becomes too big, then it’s almost impossible to do it.
“The squad needs changing. There were already a lot of changes in December – something that has not been done in years but which tells us where we were.
“Things are going to have to change and the owners are going to back it up.”
