Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hit back at Jurgen Klopp over the German’s comments regarding the Red Devils’ investment this summer.

After having been scrambling around on a frantic deadline day last summer to bring in new recruits, Manchester United have enjoyed a much more successful and organised window this time around, completing their business early with the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane for a combined fee of £116m.

Those arrivals have been met with huge excitement by the United faithful, although have raised eyebrows elsewhere, with Liverpool boss Klopp recently questioning just how their rivals were able to finance the deals.

At present, the Merseyside club have spent just £35m on defender Ibrahima Konate, a figure that has been dwarfed by the spending of United, as well as Manchester City and Chelsea, who have spent £100m and £97.5m, respectively.

After almost 18 months without supporters in stadiums, the German appeared to question just how the other members of the so-called ‘Big Six’ could splash the cash so freely.

“What United are doing, I don’t know how they did it,” Klopp said earlier this month. “We have our own way to do it. We are allowed to spend the money we earn, that we always did. This year we spent before we earned money with [Ibrahima] Konate because after last season, just to be clear, we cannot take any risk in this position at all.

“I’m never surprised about the financial power of Chelsea, City or United, I’ve been here long enough to know they always find a solution to these things.”

In response, ahead of United’s clash with Southampton, Solskjaer has defended the Old Trafford outfit and insisted that the club are living within their means.

“We are a well run club,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference. “We do have a lot of fans out there and we do have good sponsorship deals.

“As a manager you want more and more money to spend – but I have heard ‘no’ a few times.

“How other clubs run their clubs is up to them. There are different models at different clubs. I have even started buying electric cars!

“That is all I want to say about that situation.”
