Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has discussed a potential shoulder operation for Marcus Rashford and has praised the pre-season performances of Manchester United youngster Anthony Elanga.

Rashford has been struggling with a shoulder issue since sustaining a muscle tear in November, the forward’s fitness managed over the second half of last season and during England’s Euro 2020 campaign.

The 23-year-old has held talks with the club this week over the best course of action to fix the long-standing issues, having taken pain-killing injections throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

Solskjaer says a decision will be soon be made on whether the star undergoes surgery and on potential loan deals for several of the club’s young players, with an operation potentially sidelining the Rashford for around three months.

“First with Marcus, we’ll make a decision in the next few days when we check him up again,” he told MUTV. “We’ll see what’s best for him and what’s best for the club, that has to be considered.

“We think about every single player’s and the club’s best pathway – what’s best for this season, what’s best for the future. Amad’s enjoying the Olympics and we’ll sit down towards the end of the window to see how we are.

“Of course, with Elanga, a decision on him is a big one. There’s Marcus and his injury status, so we’ll make a decision on Amad when he comes back and sit down with him.”

Solskjaer also discussed the pre-season performances of Anthony Elanga with the teenager scoring a fine goal during a friendly draw with Brentford at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Elanga was handed his senior debut last season and scored on the final day of the Premier League season against Wolves, with Solskjaer admitting the Sweden u21 international is providing him with a ‘great problem’.

“He’s giving me a great problem, if you like!” he added.

“Players who score goals and have that enthusiasm and energy… we want to play a pressing game and there are no frills [with him]. If you asked him at half-time to run over to the cricket ground and get us a drink, he’d do it, because he’s that type of lad and that’s the type that has been brought through the Academy, and these are the boys you love to see do well.

“If they give you reasons to like them and they give you reasons to play them, then you’ll have to play them.”
