Liverpool talisman Mo Salah is reportedly ‘considering his options’, amid persistent speculation regarding his future at the club due to his current contract situation.
The Egypt international has enjoyed another flying start to the new season, having already registered a league-high tally of six goals, as well as a further three assists, while he’s also bagged three goals in just two Champions League games thus far.
Arguably his most impressive display of the campaign came last weekend in the thrilling 2-2 draw with title rivals Manchester City, the 29-year-old laying on an assist for fellow forward Sadio Mane, before netting a stunning strike himself following some mesmeric footwork inside the area.
That performance was the latest indicator of just how important he is to Jurgen Klopp’s side and has sparked increased scrutiny over his future, with the hugely talented asset having just over 18 months remaining on his existing deal.
As per 90min, Salah’s representatives are currently in talks with the club over extending that contract, albeit with the player still contemplating a departure, in order to fulfil his ‘career ambition’.
The report suggests that the former Chelsea man is happy to stay on Merseyside – where he has helped the club to a Premier League title and the Champions League – yet he does have a desire to potentially move abroad to ensure his status as the ‘greatest African player of all time’.
Two potential destinations to achieve that goal could be La Liga rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, with both sides believed to be interested in a player who has netted 101 top-flight goals in just 152 games for Liverpool.
Should he opt to stay at Anfield, the prolific forward is keen for an increase on his current £200,000-a-week wage and is looking to at least become the club’s highest player, with the report suggesting he is eyeing up a figure of around £350,000-a-week.
The problem is that the Reds have a well-managed wage structure and may be hesitant to splash out such vast wages for a player who turns 30 in June.
The club recently handed extended deals to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Virgil Van Dijk, albeit with even the influential Dutchman ‘only’ taking home around £250,000-a-week.
