Ronald Koeman was no ordinary defender during the peak years of a career that included spells at Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona.

Koeman won eight league titles and two European Cups across those spells, including scoring the game’s only goal as Barcelona were crowned champions of Europe for the first time in 1992 after beating Sampdoria at Wembley.

Far from a rarity however, Koeman was a goalscorer of incredible regularity despite his position in the backline, scoring an astonishing 239 goals across his career – a fine total for a leading forward, a frankly absurd one for a centre-back.

The former Dutch international scored 88 of those goals during a glittering six-year spell at Barcelona, where he formed part of Johan Cruyff’s legendary ‘Dream Team’ that delivered a previously unprecedented period of success at the Camp Nou.

The highest-scoring defender in history also netted five times in club football’s biggest fixture, the set-piece specialist proving the scourge of Real Madrid on several occasions.

Here is the now Barcelona boss bursting the net in El Clasico fixtures.
