‘No real progress’ has been made during contract discussions between Jordan Henderson and Liverpool with Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

Henderson has less than two years to run on his current contract and talks remain ongoing, though there has reportedly been little progress when it comes to agreeing an extension for the club captain.

Liverpool are currently seeking to secure the long-term futures of several key performers, with Brazil duo Alisson and Fabinho expected to sign new contracts before the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

The club’s hierarchy are also in discussions with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk over lucrative extensions, with each of that trio – like Henderson – having now entered the final two years of their respective deals.

The Athletic are reporting that both PSG and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Henderson’s situation, with the priorities of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) currently elsewhere in the squad as the Reds look to reward players central to their recent successes.

However, Henderson will be 33 by the time his current contract expires and his situation echoes that of Georginio Wijnaldum, who left Liverpool this summer to sign for PSG on a free transfer after talks over a new deal failed to find an agreement.

FSG have long invested in youth and finding a suitable length of contract for an ageing player could prove problematic, despite the stance of Jurgen Klopp who will be keen to keep the captain at the club, with the Reds’ manager crediting the England international with helping set the standards at Anfield.

FSG president Mike Gordon and sporting director Michael Edwards now face a balancing act in ensuring Liverpool remain competitive whilst planning for the longer term, with a host of players either approaching or over 30.
