Manchester United are now expecting a formal approach from Paris Saint-German for midfielder Paul Pogba, amid the growing uncertainty over the player’s future.
The 28-year-old arguably enjoyed one of his finest seasons to date in a Manchester United shirt last time out, yet that has seemingly done little to quell the speculation regarding his future due to his ongoing contract situation.
The Frenchman – who returned to Old Trafford on an £89m deal back in 2016 – has less than a year remaining on his current contract, leaving open the possibility that he could well depart for nothing in 12 months time, or be moved on this summer to recoup a transfer fee.
Recent weeks have seen reports that the Red Devils were willing to hand the World Cup winner a bumper new deal in order to ward off any potential interest from across Europe.
It has however been reported this week that he has turned down the offer of a £350,000-a-week extension, with the Telegraph reporting that he is ‘unwilling’ to commit to the club, with Paris Saint-Germain ready to pounce to take to him to the Parc des Princes.
The report suggests that United are expecting a formal approach from the Ligue 1 giants, having lost faith that they will be able to tie Pogba down to a new deal.
The player’s agent, Mino Raiola, is said to already be in discussion’s over personal terms with PSG, the club looking to add to a mouthwatering summer of investment that has seen them acquire Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Gini Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side believe that a £50m bid will be enough to tempt the Red Devils into selling, the Premier League side seeking to avoid losing the player on a free transfer for a second time, having previously seen him depart for Juventus back in 2012.
The Turin side – along with Barcelona and Real Madrid – had previously been viewed as the most likely destinations, though with club finances decimated across Europe, it would seem PSG could steal a march, with the midfielder potentially set to bolster an already fearsome squad in Paris.
As for United, the issue will now be to find a suitable replacement for the polarising Frenchman, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also keen to add a new defensive midfield recruit.
The club already have the likes of Donny Van de Beek, Fred and Scott McTominay as midfield options, although rumours would suggest that Rennes starlet Eduardo Camavinga is one player they are keeping an eye on, while West Ham’s Declan Rice has also been the subject of speculation.
United have also been linked with Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka – the latter also only having a single year left on his deal at the Allianz.
Solskjaer’s side have already announced the signing of Borussia Dortmund man Jadon Sancho and appear in talks to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
