Manchester United remains the ‘most likely’ destination for Raphael Varane this summer, though both Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in the Real Madrid defender.
Varane is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Spanish giants who are becoming ‘increasingly resigned’ to losing the France international, a trio of Premier League clubs monitoring the centre-back’s situation at the Bernabeu.
The 28-year-old has so far shown no inclination to sign a new deal at Real Madrid, with reports in the Spanish capital suggesting a fee of around £40-£45m could be enough to convince the La Liga side to do business.
Manchester United have had a long-held interest in the player, though The Athletic are reporting that the Red Devils are wary of the pursuit, having previously ‘been stung’ when attempting to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, with the defender using the interest as leverage for a new deal.
However, Varane is reportedly open to a new challenge after a decade in Spain where he has won three league titles and four Champions League trophies, with a move to Old Trafford his ‘most likely’ destination despite interest from both Chelsea and City, while PSG are also believed to be admirers.
United are keen to sign a new centre-back partner for Harry Maguire with neither Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelof having convinced, though must now decide whether to pursue Varane or a younger option such as Villarreal’s Pau Torres or Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is keen to keep Varane at the club, though the Spanish side will sell the defender this summer should he refuse to sign a new deal in a bid to raise funds for their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.
