Romelu Lukaku has confirmed he will stay at Inter Milan this summer, despite transfer speculation linking the forward with a return to Chelsea.
Lukaku has been linked with a return to the Premier League following the departure of Antonio Conte at the San Siro, the Italian having resigned as manager after being informed of the club’s need to cut costs amid spiralling debts this summer.
Conte guided Inter to a first league title since the 2009/10 season last term with Lukaku at the forefront of the club’s success, scoring 24 league goals and providing 11 assists for the newly-crowned Italian champions.
Chelsea had been linked with a move to sign the Belgium international as Thomas Tuchel seeks the addition of a new centre-forward in the summer transfer window, with the west Londoners prepared to capitalise on the financial uncertainty at Inter with a big-money bid.
Lukaku has now dealt a blow to the Blues’ hopes of securing his signing after confirming his intention to remain at Inter, revealing he has held positive talks with new manager Simeone Inzaghi over the prospect of retaining the Serie A title next season.
“Yes, I am staying,” he told Belgian outlet VTM.
“I’ve already had contact with new manager [Simone] Inzaghi.
“Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet… but it was a very positive conversation.
“There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning the league with Inter]. I feel good at Inter.”
