Mikel Arteta has outlined his ‘goal’ for Arsenal this season as the north London side prepare to begin their Premier League campaign at Brentford tomorrow.
Arsenal travel the short distance to face the newly-promoted Bees in the opening fixture of the 2021/22 Premier League season on Friday evening, as the Gunners look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign last term.
Arteta’s side slumped to an eighth-place finish last season to miss out on European football altogether, but the Spaniard has been pleased with his side’s recruitment and has outlined his determination to ensure Arsenal give their ‘best version’ on a consistent basis this term.
“On this first period of the transfer window we have done a few things we wanted to do and that’s going to help us get the squad in a better place there is still some window to go so I’m sure that things will happen,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
“I’m willing to work with players I have and get the best out of them and see what we can do.
“Our goal is to get the best version consistently that will get us closer to winning football matches and that’s what I want from the team. Consistently give the best version, that’s something we haven’t done and we must control and do it.
“On Friday, win and then we will be in a strong position and the rest will come.”
Arteta was asked what will make him ‘happy’ over the opening weeks of the campaign and is hopeful that his side can put into practice the preparation they have worked on throughout pre-season.
Ahead of the clash with Brentford tomorrow, he has urged his players to bring the ‘energy’ that has been shown in training this summer.
“[I hope] That the team puts in place what we’ve been working on,” he said. “The energy that they have been training with that in games they do it more consistently. How we compete in matches to get the wins is the most relevant thing.”
Arteta also discussed the pressure upon him following a challenging first full season in charge at the Emirates, with the Spaniard under no illusions that there are high expectations at a club of Arsenal’s stature.
“The demands of this club are so high. The expectations are so high. We have to cope with that.”
